HUMANITARIAN DESIGN

Although our primary focus is residential, we are fortunate enough to also get involved in community/ development work. This is often based in developing countries, within a different culture and climate, sometimes with considerable cost constraints and logistical construction challenges. Here we take inspiration from local vernacular, both traditional and modern, and design in accordance with the regional climate. Beyond the technical challenges, human issues necessarily dominate the brief. Here our role is to listen, to take a step back and question assumptions, and to translate thoughts, feelings and human need into form.

PARTNERS

Collaboration is key with community led projects, and we have partnered with “Learning Planet”. This inspiring NGO helps rural communities access education, training, renewable energy and micro finance. We have also partnered with KarmaNutra, the ESALA Projects Office of the University of Edinburgh, and the Manchester School of Architecture. Together with Ola Uduku, Karma Nutra, and Learning Planet we have run workshops to give students the opportunity to design working  projects which have the potential to be realised.
