Tuktuk school, India

Tuktuk school is a new idea in education in cities of developing countries, aimed at the world’s poorest children. We are currently working with Learning Planet to realise a prototype school.

Tuktuks and bicycles are adapted to become portable teaching units, reaching out to urban migrant children of street and squatter settlements. A building is a focal point for the project. This centre will house the vehicles, have workshops to adapt and service them as an on-going process, and will contain training and administrative facilities.

Most out-reach teaching projects are restricted to rural situations, where basic village schools can be supplemented by additional skills and equipment, or where the local community have no school to speak of. This project is for cities. Migrant children in urban situations may have even less educational opportunities, and more pressure to to spend their time earning. Although NGO’s are involved in slum education, generally illegally built squatter settlements will not have teaching facilities.

More information on the project can be found on Learning Planet’s website, here.
